Over the last three years the UK has experienced a series of exceptional weather phenomena including the dry spring of 2011, the dry winter of 2011/12 and the very wet summer, autumn and winter of 2012. 2013 has been marked by a very wet start to the year. As a result there has been a significant increase in the number of reported cases of equine gastric sand impaction and sand colic in the East of England.
