VetWatch: Bitting Injuries

The bit is one of our riding aids we use to communicate with the horse to get it moving in the manner to which we require. The bit must not be seen in isolation as all riding aids are used in combination. Without good response to the impulsion created by the legs and seat the bit is less effective.

This article by Richard Frost MA Vet MB MRCVS BAEDT of Hawkedon Equine Clinic in Bury St Edmunds, discusses the common sites of bit damage, signs of pain in the horse and how you can avoid bit damage.
